I Am ___ : Week 2

Sep 27, 2026  •  Seth Barber

What if the greatest trap we face every day is not one we can see, but one built entirely out of other people's opinions? This message cuts straight to the heart of one of the most quietly destructive patterns in our lives: the approval trap. We explore how the fear of rejection quietly drives so many of our decisions, from the words we choose to say or hold back, to the way we scroll through social media hoping for validation. Drawing from Proverbs 29:25, which warns that the fear of man is a snare, we are reminded that there are two kingdoms at work in our world at all times, one operating on faith and one operating on fear. The approval trap is a fear-based system, and when we live inside it, we stop asking what God wants and start asking what people think. The message challenges us to recognize that when rejection becomes our greatest fear, approval becomes our greatest addiction. And like any addiction, it is never satisfied. The same person who applauds us today can wound us with criticism tomorrow. This is not the life we were called to live, and this message begins to show us the way out.

Chapter 1: The Approval Trap and the Fear of Rejection

0:00 - 11:40

We explore how much of our lives are controlled by what we think others think of us, and why the fear of rejection drives us into an addiction to approval.

Chapter 2: People Make Terrible Mirrors

11:40 - 17:16

When we look to others to tell us who we are, we set ourselves up for an emotional rollercoaster that is both exhausting and dangerous.

Chapter 3: God's Acceptance Is Different From People's Approval

17:16 - 28:50

God's acceptance of us in Christ is unconditional and permanent, rooted not in what we do but in who He is and what He has already done.

Chapter 4: Stop Giving People a Job They Were Never Created to Do

28:50 - 34:17

We must stop expecting people to determine our worth and value, because that responsibility belongs to God alone and is too heavy a burden for any person to carry.

Chapter 5: What God Says Has to Become Louder

34:17 - 45:36

When we anchor ourselves in what God declares about us, we are freed from the exhausting cycle of seeking human validation and can live with unshakable confidence.
